About Panic Attacks – More Than “Panicking”
We often talk about anxiety as though anxiety is entirely cognitive – that anxiety is just worries and fears. Anxiety can be very physical as well. That is especially true of panic attacks. Panic attacks are profound, immensely overwhelming and often extremely physical events with symptoms that mimic heart attacks. During an attack, a person can have symptoms that include:
- Rapid Heartbeat
- Chest Pain
- Weakness/Lightheadedness
- Sweating
Individuals may also have difficulty concentrating/thinking, rapid thoughts, and even feelings of disassociation. In the long term, frequent panic attacks can lead to further symptoms such as eye pain, tingling, and much more.
During a panic attack, a person can feel like they’re panicking, but often (although not always) that panicking is based on fears about what they’re experiencing:
- “Why is my heart beating so fast?”
- “Why do I feel so weak?”
- “What’s happening to me?”
It is common during a panic attack to feel like you might die. It is not uncommon for those experiencing their first panic attack to call 911, thinking they may be having a medical emergency. Many organizations even *recommend* that people call 911 during their first panic attack because the symptoms can be so similar to medical emergencies that it is better to be safe.
Still, many times, the person is experiencing panic attacks, and once a person has one panic attack, they are more prone to getting others.
The Need for a Therapist to Stop the Cycle of Panic Disorder
Panic attacks tend to cause people to experience two additional symptoms. One is they become hypersensitive to their body’s sensations, meaning that they notice every change in how their body feels and experience it at a stronger level.
The other is that they start to fear further panic attacks. Unfortunately, that fear causes anxiety, which causes a person to experience things like rapid heartbeat, triggering another panic attack in the individual. Because of the way that panic attacks mimic medical issues, some people also develop health anxiety, furthering their anxious thoughts and triggers.
Panic attacks become a cycle – a cycle that is often difficult to break on your own. They are also so challenging that they can dramatically disrupt your life. That is why seeking a therapist can help.
Working together, you and I can work on relaxation techniques and strategies to help stop the cycle of panic attacks. We can work on ways to reduce hyperventilation, improve your ability to reduce stress, use techniques to reduce anxious thoughts, and more. We can also work on reducing the anxiety you experience in general as a way to help you manage the triggers that lead to attacks.
